Having completed my research into my Paternal Grandfathers Family (GREAVES), I decided I would then research my Paternal Grandmother’s Family (GUILLIATT).

My Grandfather John Mastin Greaves married Ada Alice Guilliatt at Walkeringham in 1908.

I always believed that the name ‘Guilliatt’ was quite an uncommon name until I discovered that my G.G.G. Grandfather Thomas Guilliatt was the father of at least 18 children. This made me realise I was going to find a considerable number of ancestors. I discovered quite a large concentration of Guilliatts in the North East of Lincolnshire.

It is widely believed that the Guilliatts were Huguenots who came over from France many years ago. Could this possibly be the reason that my research only took me back as far as William Guilliatt 1741 – 1816 !!

The above Huguenot Monument in Franschhoek was inaugurated on April 7th 1948. With its simplicity and elegance of line the monument displays a historic French character. The female figure , with the bible in her right hand and broken chain in her left hand, personifies the spirit of religious freedom.

My thanks to the following for supplying some of the material for my story.

THE GUILLIATT FAMILY

as researched by Janet Straw 2003.

The name Guilliatt is French.   During the search for the Guilliatt records of the 1700’s in England, many different spellings were found including Gillyatt, Gillyat, Gilliat, Guilliatt and Gylliatt.

It is generally believed that the Guilliatts came over from France, many generations back, with the ‘Huguenots’.

My research has taken me back as far as:

1st Generation.

WILLIAM and ELIZABETH GUILLIATT.

                   St. Edmunds Church, Riby.

William (1741-1816) married Elizabeth Stark (1752-1838) at Riby on 4th May 1773.   At the time they were married William was living at Irby and Elizabeth at Riby.   Witnesses present at the wedding included Frances Stark and John Burringham.   William was buried at Irby on 22nd September 1816 aged 75 and Elizabeth on 28th November 1838 aged 86.   I cannot find any further information on this couple (parents names, where born, brothers and sisters etc.)

After their marriage they settled in Irby where they had 9 children.   Mary born 1774, Thomas 1777, Grace 1779, Ann 1783, Elizabeth 1784, Thomas 1787, William 1791, John 1794 and Thomas 1798.

         St. Andrews Church, Irby.

2nd Generation.

MARY (1774)   married Adam Naylor in 1795 at Winteringham.

THOMAS (1777)   died in infancy and was buried on 14th December 1778 at Irby.

GRACE (1779)   married Wm. Fowler in 1819 at Waltham.

ANN (1783)   never married.   She died on 25th June 1859 and was buried at Irby on 27th June 1859.   At the time of her death she was living at Habrough.   Her tombstone is clearly visible and reads as follows:-

In memory of Ann Guilliatt died 25th June 1859 aged 76.

Faithful servant of the Cuthberts family upwards of 40 years.

Mourn not for me my race is run,

It is the Lord, his will be done.

ELIZABETH (1784)   no further details known.

THOMAS (1787)   the second son to be given this name.   He, like his younger brother Thomas, also died in infancy.   He was buried on 2nd February 1789 at Irby.

WILLIAM (1791)   married Rachel England (born 1797) on 30th December 1816 at Elstronwick in Yorkshire.   They had 5 daughters, Elizabeth, Ann, Mary, Rachel and Hannah as well as 3 sons, Thomas, William and Richard.   Richard died in infancy.   Thomas was born in 1826 and William in 1828.

JOHN (1794) never married.   Both the 1851 and 1861 Census show him living at Irby and describe him as a Cottager with 10 acres.   Both Census also show he has a housekeeper living in with her children.

THOMAS (1798)   the third son of William and Elizabeth to be given this name.   He was also the youngest child.   He moved to Scotter (reason unknown) and lived there all his life working as a labourer.   He was also the Parish Clerk for many years.   This Thomas is the one we are all descended from.   He married twice and had 18 children in total.   He died in 1880 and was buried on 19th November 1880 at Scotter.

St. Peters Church, Scotter, which stands in

a commanding position overlooking the River Eau.

His first wife was Elizabeth Crooks the daughter of William and Susanna Crooks of Susworth.   She was baptised on 16th January 1801 at Scotter.   Thomas and Elizabeth were married on 31st August 1822 at Scotter.   They had 8 children, William (born 1823), Thomas (1824), John (1826), George (1827), Elizabeth (1829), George (1830), Edward (1832) and Mary Ann (1835).   It is pretty safe to

say that Elizabeth must have died in childbirth.   The day she was buried, 19th September 1835, her youngest child Mary Ann was baptised.

Thomas didn’t waste much time before he remarried.   His second wife was Ann Craggs the daughter of John and Sarah Craggs.   Ann was born on 30th June 1816 at Upton cum Kexby.   Thomas and his second wife had 10 children, Henry (born 1837), Charles (1838), Joseph (1841),  Charles (1843), James (1845), Sarah (1850), Charles (1852), George (1854), Thomas (1859) and Fanny (1862).   Ann also died relatively young (aged 50) and was buried on 10th January 1867 at Scotter.

3rd Generation.

THOMAS (1826)   was born in Elstronwick.   He emigrated to the United States and married Orrilia Heath of Kenokee in 1860 and settled in Greenwood, Missouri, U.S.A.

They had 14 children, 9 boys and 5 girls.

WILLIAM (1828)   was also born in Elstronwick.   The 1871 Census of Ontario shows a William (42) and Jane Guilliatt (45) living as farmers, originating from England and Scotland respectively.   They had 2 children Elizabeth (born 1860) and William (1868).   Both children were born in Ontario and the family lived at West York, a township of Etobicoke, now Toronto.

WILLIAM (1823)  was born at Susworth and on the 10th July 1851 he married Rebecca Clifton at Scotter.   They had 2 sons, William born 1860 and Thomas William born 1872.   Both were born at Scotter.   William died in 1873 aged 50 and is buried at Scotter.

THOMAS (1824)  was born at Middlemoor Farm, Scotter on 7.12.1824 and was baptised at Scotter on 10.12.1824.   He married Elizabeth Marshall on 30.3.1852 at the Church of Holy Trinity, Messingham.

They then emigrated to the U.S.A. in the same year, locating in Cincinnati.   Eighteen months later they settled in Tippecanoe City, Ohio, and four years thereafter moved to Nebraska where Thomas filed his claim on his farm.   Beginning so poor as to be unable to build even a shanty or buy a team, he assisted Thomas L. Hallen build the first mill on Rock Creek in 1858, some distance above the Glen Rock Mill.   In 1862 Thomas began life on his own farm, living in what was his wood and wash house.   The mark of prosperity continued with few interruptions, resulting in a pleasant home and fine farm.

Thomas and Elizabeth had 12 children, only 6 of them reaching adulthood.   They included George M. (born 1854), Mary J. (1855), Thomas Richard (1857), William H. (1859), Joseph (1860), Sarah E. (?),  Jane (1863), Emma (1866), James (1867).

Back Row: Jane, Joseph, James, Sarah E.,

  Front Row: Emma, THOMAS, 1824 –1897, ELIZABETH, 1831 – 1902, T. Richard.

Thomas and two of his sons were listed as farmers in the Nebraska State Gazetteer Farmers Directory, published by J.M. Wolfe & Co., 1890.   They appeared to have two separate farms, one in Auburn and the other in Glen Rock.

Thomas died on August 2nd 1897 in Auburn, Nebraska, U.S.A., Elizabeth died in 1902.

JOHN (1826)   was born at Scotterthorpe and was baptised on 21.5.1826 at Scotter.   He married Ann Marshall (place and church unknown).   As far as I am aware Ann is no relation to Elizabeth Marshall who married Thomas Guilliatt.

John and Ann had 10 children, 7 boys and 3 girls.   William (born 1850), Alice (1852), John (1854), Elizabeth (1856), John (1858), George (1859), Ellen (1862), Thomas (1864), John Henry (1867), James (1870).

John died at Scotter in 1906 and was buried there on 22.9.1906.   Ann died in 1915.

Henry spent all his working life as a teacher in Grimsby.   He took charge of the Central Market

He also taught at St. James Church Day School in Grimsby.   Henry taught for a total of 46 years in Grimsby and was beloved and honoured by so many, that after his death in 1917, a plaque in his memory was put up in St. James’s Church, Grimsby.

CHARLES (1838)  was born and died in Scotter.   He was baptised there on 9.12.1838 and buried on 11.8.1839.

JOSEPH (1841)  was born at Scotter and baptised there on 4.4.1841, he died in September 1921.   He married Elizabeth Ashton who was born at Worlaby, Lincs in 1836 and died May 7th 1896.   Joseph and Elizabeth had a very large family (at least 14 children).   Charles Ashton (born 1862), Thomas (1864), Ellen Louise (1867), Mary Ann (1868), James (1869), James William (1871), Henry (1873), George (1876), Sarah Jane (1877), Louisa (1879), John (1880), Joseph (1881), Fred (1883), Richard (1887).

I have done very little research on this family, however I have met Mr. Fred Guilliatt of Healing, Lincs, the grandson of  Joseph (1841) and his son Nigel Guilliatt who lives at Ruskington, Lincs.

CHARLES (1843)  was born at Scotter and baptised there on 22.3.1843.   He died at Scotter and was buried on 24.1.1844.

a Coal Agent.   They had 3 known children, Annie (born 1872), Thomas (1876), Fanny (1878).   The 1881 Census shows they had 2 Boarders living in, William Lupton aged 36 a Stone Mason and Nathan Normington aged 22 also a Stone Mason.   It is possible that William Lupton and Mary Lupton were brother and sister.

SARAH (1850)  was born at Scotter and baptised there on 13.3.1850.   She married Richard Good who was born at Saxilby on Nov. 18th 1850, the son of John and Mary Good.  Sarah and Richard were married on 29.11.1869 at Scotter.   They had one known daughter, Fanny Ellen, who was born at Scotter on 1.10.1871.

In his later years Sarahs father came to live with them.   The 1871 Census shows her father Thomas (aged 73) a widower still working as a labourer to the Rev. J.H. Pooley.

CHARLES (1852)  was born at Scotter and baptised there on 19.9.1852.   He married Mary Ann Ross who was born in 1854 at Althorpe, Lincs.   They were married in 1879 in Sculcoates District, Hull, Yorks.   Number, if any, of children, unknown.   Charles worked as a Dock Labourer.

GEORGE (1854)  was born at Scotter and baptised there on 29.12.1854.   He died at Scotter in 1858 and was buried there on 14.12.1858.

4th Generation.

WILLIAM (1868) was born in Ontario.   He married Julia Marrie Foreman of Chatham, England in 1894 and they eventually settled in Parry Sound.   They had one known son Thomas (born 1898).

William was obviously unsure as to which parish he was born in.   On the 1891 census he puts place of birth as Aisby and on the 1901 census he puts Pilham.   He was in fact born at Gilby which is a small hamlet between the two aforementioned villages.   All that remains at Gilby is a very large

Farmhouse, Farm and one cottage.

After Williams wife died he went to live with his eldest daughter and son in law (Ada Alice and John Mastin Greaves) at Glebe Farm, Walkeringham.

He lived with them until his death in 1935.   William and Elizabeth are both buried in Walkeringham Church Yard.   William was buried on 29.11.1935 and Elizabeth on 12.6.1929.   They had 4 children Edgar (born 1880), Ada Alice (1884), Emily (1887) and Alfred (1888).

Thomas and his wife lived in a thatched house in Sands Lane, Scotter around 1900.   On a visit to Lincoln market he bought a new strain of potato, the “Northern Star”, which was so expensive that he paid £7 for only 5 potatoes.   These he cut up and planted in his garden and from them obtained enough seed for the following year, eventually selling them for £120 per ton.

Thomas and Sarah left Scotter in 1915 and took another farm in Yorkshire.   They finally gave up farming in 1920 and moved to Retford, Notts, living at 15 Tunnel Road.

Quite a number of Guilliatts were born at Susworth, some of which were most certainly born at the White Horse Cottages.   ‘White Horse’ was the name of the local public house at the time and the cottages were attached to the public house.   There is also evidence that there may have been several more cottages to the rear of the pub.

The pub has since been modernised and renamed the “Jenny Wren”. The old cottages which were attached to the pub now form part of the restaurant.

THE CAWKWELL BRANCH OF THE GUILLIATT FAMILY TREE.

A BRIEF HISTORY.

On 25.11.1873 my Great Grandfather William Guilliatt married Elizabeth Cawkwell of Belton.   I decided to research the Cawkwell family and got back as far as William Cawkwell who was born about 1745 (place unknown).

He married Mary Egarr at Epworth in 1772.   Mary was the daughter of a Huguenot immigrant, Abraham Egarr.   John Cawkwell (1773 – 1852) who married Anne Fawcitt, was a corn miller in Belton, Lincs.   The mill in Westgate, Belton is still standing, but is now a private house.

Erected in the early 19th century, this tower mill worked by wind, latterly with only two sails, until the early 1930’s, after which it was engine driven until 1960. It had patent sails and drove three pairs of  stones, two of French and one of greys. By 1978 only one pair of stones remained, with the lower part of the upright shaft, steelyards, governor and one bridgetree. This gear was taken in 1980 and stored at North Leverton mill in Nottinghamshire. The iron bridgetree has since found its way to Bardwell in Suffolk, where the tower mill has been put back to work.

Belton mill was converted into a house between 1982 and 1984 and now sports a dummy cap together with a huge modern house on the side.

Elizabeths (1855 – 1929) brother Alfred was the first Cawkwell to farm on Goole Fields, at Croft Farm, about 80 acres.   His eldest son, Walter, took over the farm which was in turn taken  over by his four sons, Norman, Harry, Herbert and William.   The farm was sold in the late 1980’s.

A point of interest.   Elizabeth and Alfreds cousin, Thomas Cawkwell, the son of Abrahams brother John, was transported as a convict to Australia in 1863, for setting fire to corn and hay stacks in Belton.   The stacks belonged to the employer of a servant who Thomas was courting and Thomas had been warned off the premises by this man.   He never returned to England and he died unmarried in Australia.
